Examples of Suspense
1. When Miss Brent couldn't read the signature from her letter "What was the name? The signature was rather difficult to read." pg. 8
2. When the words in Mr. Wargrave's letter were unclear and weren't able to be read from Constance Culmington, pg. 2
3. When the ship was getting closer to the rocks and they shut the engine off and they just drifted into the dock "fred Narracott shut off the engine, they nosed their way gently into a little natural inlet between rocks." pg. 27
4. How Mr. Blore knows all the names of those who are traveling to Indian Island, even though Christie says that none of the people going know each other pg. 13-14
Examples of Foreshadowing
1. When the old man says to Mr. Blore "I'm talking to you, young man. The day of judgement is very close at hand" pg. 15
2. When Mr. Lombard told Vera "There's a wasp crawling up your arm. No- keep quite still" pg. 20. On pg. 31 it shows the poem and it says..."Six little Indian boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung on and then there were five"
3. When Vera looks out at sea and all she can think of is drowning and part of the poem is about on of the Indian boys dying at sea. pg.31/32
4. When Mr. Wargrave asks Dr. Armstrong if there was a guest by the name of Constance Culmington and he says no. "D'you know of Constnace Culmington?' "Er- no I'm afraid I don't' pg. 34
I chose these examples because they are good examples of suspense and foreshadowing. The suspense examples show a mysterious or 'hole' in the story that really had me wondering. They are something that really got me thinking of what may happen in the future and other possibilities that it may have on the others in the story. The examples of foreshadowing at first didn't quite make sense, but then in a bit of time they would be solved by something else that occurred in the story with someone else.
Charlie - You're right...foreshadowing usually makes you wonder. And sometimes it leads you on a path that swerves the wrong way. That's the hope of the author! As you keep reading, the foreshadowing makes more sense...and then there is a new one. The suspense keeps you on your seat...think cliffhangers at the end of television shows.
